Become a Mentor

At CommunAbility we believe that there is something powerful and empowering in disabled people supporting other disabled people! All too often, disabled people are perceived as the recipients of support rather than providers. Our 16-week e-mentorship program uniquely addresses this by providing postsecondary students with disabilities the opportunity to develop supportive mentorship relationships with postsecondary graduates with disabilities.

Because our program is online, regardless of where you live in the province of Canada, you can take part in a positive and rewarding mentorship experience that provides a postsecondary student with a disability with support and guidance.

Benefits of the Program

Our e-mentorship program offers benefits for both mentors and mentees. As a mentor, you will benefit from sharing your insights and experiences. The program also provides the opportunity for you to give back and may lead to more personal satisfaction. Mentees benefit tremendously from the knowledge, support, and wisdom they will receive from their mentors.

How do I Qualify for the Program?

To qualify as a mentor you must:

  • self identify as disabled;
  • be at least 21 years of age and a graduate of a recognized postsecondary education institution;
  • live in Canada and have current or recent employment and/or volunteer experience;
  • demonstrate a desire to participate in the program and be willing to abide by the program rules and regulations; and
  • meet with your mentee through chat messaging every two weeks for the duration of the program.

How do I Apply?

Postsecondary graduates with disabilities apply online for the opportunity to become a CommunAbility Mentor. The application process for mentors has 3 phases:

  1. The first phase is the online application and includes screening of the application and reference checks.
  2. After passing the first phase, candidates must obtain and submit the results of a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC). Learn more by reading our information sheet titled, About Police Vulnerable Sector Check. We have also put together a list of police services in Ontario. Each police service name listed hyperlinked to information about how to obtain a PVSC from that service. View Ontario Police Service List.
  3. Successful candidates are asked to prepare for their mentorship experience by completely online training, an online quiz, and a declaration.

If successful, mentors are paired with mentees through a unique matching algorithm that takes into consideration their preferences and capabilities.
